Safer construction at the West Link

The ongoing tunnel construction in the West Link needed a solution to carry important media infrastructure over the construction site. With Scanmast pipe bridge, the construction is facilitated while important media carriers are protected.

The West Link is a new railway tunnel that will improve rail travel in Gothenburg and western Sweden. The tunnel underneath contains double railway tracks and three stations, making it one of Gothenburg's largest projects. While work is underway underground, all above-ground logistics must function as usual.

- These types of projects suit us perfectly as we are able to deliver and offer complete solutions to the customer. We have a particular strength in logistics, project management and calculations. Here we realised everything from an idea on paper to a turnkey product on site," says Andreas Gidlund at Scanmast.

Scanmast's assignment for the West Link was to develop a solution for carrying important media infrastructure over the ongoing tunnel construction. The result was a pipe bridge to carry culvert pipes, gas pipes, fibre and electrical cabling.

The pipe bridge improves safety

The pipe bridge was built alongside the construction. Other contractors then had to add their lines before the entire pipe bridge was lifted into place. An additional challenge was that shafts were being dug continuously on site. Therefore, there was a requirement for a protective roof above the media carrier.

- The roof of the pipe bridge can withstand falling rocks and masses of 275 kg from a height of two metres. A site-unique solution that became a reality. "We were many contractors working in the same area, but thanks to good communication, our installation went very well," says Andreas Gidlund.

With the pipe jetty in place, work on the West Link is easier. Above all, the safety of the gas pipelines has been improved thanks to the roof-protected jetty.
