Jonas Runnqvist, Design Manager, and Håkan Bälter, Design Engineer, are part of the Design & Calculation team at Scanmast. Together they work to develop and customise solutions for Scanmast's customers.

In his job as a designer, Håkan works on both adapting existing products and developing completely new ones. He also has technical drawing responsibilities in projects and works with customers, salespeople and project managers to produce construction drawings. A large part of his work also involves providing technical support.

"It is of course important to have a good engineering background, but it is also very important to be interested, co-operative, responsive, calm, thorough and structured," he says.

One project he is particularly proud of is the construction of a wood conveyor for the Krylbo sawmill.

"We designed and constructed a 66 metre long bridge for timber transport across a ravine. Jonas and I worked closely together to find a solution, and it was an incredibly successful project with a very satisfied customer.
The solution we chose was based on using one of our strongest mast sections, normally used vertically, and laying it horizontally. We assembled the section into three parallel 66-metre trusses, which served as the load-bearing structure. Then we designed all the peripheral equipment, such as walkways and foundations," says Jonas.

Due to its weight, around 50 tonnes, one of Sweden's largest mobile cranes was required to lift it into place.

"Not long after the transporter was on site, the first timber package was transported across the ravine without any problems. A great feeling!"

Jonas explains how their team collaborates with other departments to drive development forward.

"We work closely with the sales department to take ideas from customers further into product development. In projects, we also collaborate with suppliers and directly with our customers, working together to develop and customise solutions that effectively meet their specific needs."

The direct contact with customers is something he emphasises as a strength.

"It's important that customers can also easily reach us without having to go through multiple intermediaries. This allows them to get answers to their questions quickly and allows us to create smoother and more flexible projects. By being involved early in the process, participating in site visits and proposing solutions that are customised to both our and the client's circumstances, we can prevent problems and ensure better results."

Both Jonas and Håkan enjoy their work and emphasise the good working environment.

"The best thing is that we have a very good atmosphere in the group and we always help each other when needed," says Håkan.

He also appreciates the challenge of the development projects, where both designs and delivery times are demanding.

Scanmast's design and calculation team consists of seven people - three in design, three in calculation and Jonas himself.

"We have a good balance of guys and girls, younger and more experienced. Our different backgrounds and experiences complement each other very well," he says.

Håkan agrees and emphasises the importance of a positive working environment.

"We have high standards, respect each other and make sure we have fun at work. This creates both a creative workplace and satisfied customers."
