At Scanmast, we have successfully delivered and installed two customised air traffic control towers at Liege and Charleroi airports in Belgium in 2023 and 2024, demonstrating our ability to meet complex airport infrastructure challenges with tailor-made solutions.
Challenges and needs
Liege and Charleroi airports needed robust towers to house advanced air traffic control camera equipment. Our main challenge was to ensure the stability of the towers in harsh wind conditions, as even small movements can disrupt the functioning of the cameras.
Our solution
To meet the high demands, we chose to use our ALTA tower with the following adaptations:
- Reinforced sections and diagonals for increased stability
- Specially designed platform at the top with pedestal for camera body and enable servicing when needed
- Obstacle painting and obstacle lighting according to local regulations
- Customised foundation drawings for each airport
Delivery and installation
- Liege: We delivered a 42-metre tower, installed in autumn 2023
- Charleroi: We installed a 33-metre tower in autumn 2024
Our in-house technicians carried out efficient installations on site, despite the challenging conditions of the airport environment. We used mobile cranes to lift the towers into place.
The results of our work
By delivering these customised towers, Scanmast has demonstrated its ability to meet SAAB's high standards and deliver solutions that ensure safe and efficient air traffic control. This project emphasises our position as a leading provider of advanced tower solutions for critical infrastructure.
