New mast in Hammarland, Åland for Telia Towers

Together with our customer Telia Towers, a new telecoms mast has been built on Högberget in Hammarland, Åland. The old mast had served its purpose for over 50 years and needed to be replaced with a new one. The challenge was to carry out a complex project where planning, earthworks and installation required precision and co-operation between several actors. In addition, the old mast had to remain in place until all the equipment and tenants had been moved to the new mast.

The project started with earthworks in October 2024, carried out by Ålands Schakt, which built the foundation for the new mast. Scanmast was then given responsibility for producing, delivering and installing the mast. The structure consists of tubes that are screwed together and stabilised with a total of 18 stay wires from three directions. To reach the full height of 100 metres, both a crane truck and a helicopter were used to assemble the highest sections.

The new mast is adapted for 2G, 4G and future 5G communications. There are already 20 active 5G stations in Åland, with four more in the pipeline. The old 2G network is still used by alarm systems, wildlife cameras and older mobile phones, among others.

The installation of the new mast went according to plan, despite some challenges with the lines as the old mast remained in place during the work. Scanmast's team handled both the design and the work at height with skill and commitment. The old mast will be dismantled later in the year when the transition to the new mast is complete.

The project has ensured modern communications technology for Åland while meeting high standards of security and efficiency.
