New lighting was installed on site by helicopter

The lighting on Hammarbybacken's steepest descent needed replacing after the slope was closed. Inaccessible terrain, climbing tracks and a mountain course made it tricky. But with some smart solutions, the challenge was solved in a smooth way.

Hammarbybacken in Stockholm offers slalom skiing, climbing, tobogganing and other activities that obviously need lighting at night. However, both light sources and lighting columns in one of the slopes were old and needed to be replaced.

- "In our contract, we have managed the entire project from the demolition of existing foundations to the installation and commissioning of the new lighting," says Anders Karlsson, Lighting Manager at Scanmast.

Smart solutions for difficult terrain

- Normally we use a normal excavator, but in steep and inaccessible places it can be difficult. Even impossible in this case," Anders explains.

Instead, a so-called spider excavator was used. This is a four-legged excavator that easily manoeuvres up the steep slope and around the toboggan run without damaging it. A helicopter was then called in to lift the masts into place.

- It is important to think a little smart. In cases like this, we make the masts completely ready at the bottom of the hill, so that we can only commission them once they are in place," says Anders.

Fast assembly by helicopter

The masts were thus prepared, including the attachment of electrical cabinets, the installation of luminaires and the routing of cables in the mast so that they could be fully assembled. The masts were then lifted into place by helicopter. It went quickly too!

- We work with very experienced helicopter pilots. They have radio contact with the fitters on the ground and fit the masts in very smoothly. These nine masts only took about 45 minutes to put in place.

All that remained was to connect the power cables to each mast before the descent could be illuminated.

- "It was a fun project for everyone involved, we are satisfied and the customer is happy. Hammarbybacken now has fresh lighting that also uses significantly less energy," says Anders Karlsson.
